Patient Corner – BrainStim TMS

Hope Starts Today

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA approved treatment for patients suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) who are not responding to current drug therapy or cannot tolerate there many side effects. TMS is non-invasive, requires no sedation, and is proven safe and effective with virtually no side effects Unlike antidepressants—which manage symptoms only—TMS therapy treats the cause of the medical condition itself to restore and strengthen neural networks affecting your mood. TMS therapy has proven to be more effective than antidepressants and other depression treatments, especially in patients who have reported a negative response to medication alone – with 78% of patients experiencing significant symptom reduction and 45% achieving remission.

antidepressants vs. ect vs. tms

Antidepressents are systemic, which means that the medication is absorbed into the blood stream. This can cause numerous side effects. TMS is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure with no systemic side effects. TMS and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) are both effective in the treatment of depression, but ECT is associated with more side effects and is significantly more intense. ECT is performed in a hospital and you must be anesthetized and restrained during the procedure. ECT works by applying a brief electrical pulse to the brain that medically induces a seizure.

what to expect from tms therapy

TMS is a brief outpatient therapy session lasting about 20 minutes when performed for depression treatment. Patients sit in a comfortable reclining chair, while the TMS Certified Psychiatrist performs the ‘mapping’ session (location of the area to be treated), and the TMS Certified Technician performs the daily sessions under the care of the physician.

tms treatment does not:

  • Require anesthesia or any medication of any kind
  • Require the insertion of any needles
  • Require any type of shock delivery, like ECT
  • Require any downtime after the treatment
  • Cause memory loss or brain tumors
  • Cause systemic or adverse side effects, like medications

  • Provide long-lasting relief from depression
  • Promote improved sleep
  • Improve mild anxiety
  • Decrease feelings of sadness and gloom
  • Elevate mood
  • Help with regaining interest in things

TMS THERAPY

alternate uses

TMS is a unique platform for delivering energy to the brain and stimulating various specific anatomical locations. TMS magnets can be placed over different brain regions, and pulse sequences can be designed to be either excitatory or inhibitory. This allows for a vast potential of other conditions that could be treated, and research is being pursued on many fronts. These are all considered to be off-label uses for TMS currently.

ocd status: fda approved
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is known to live in a deeper part of the brain that is not treated with currently available TMS magnets. Research is being done on magnets specifically designed to reach the OCD regions of the brain, the Orbital Frontal Cortex and the Anterior Cingulate Cortex. Current technology allows us to reach a region of the brain that connects to these areas that has shown modest clinical benefit.
